Carlos Porrata – December Dance Palace Lobby Artist

December 2, 2021 by Chris Grace

December 1, 2021 – December 31, 2021 PST

Carlos Porrata worked for 30 years as a California State Park Ranger, learning and sharing the natural and cultural history of the parks. Today, he continues to share his observations of the natural world as a wildlife photographer based in Inverness, California.

Spending long hours in the wild gives Carlos a great deal of pleasure and he exhibits that enthusiasm through his passion for photography. He captures moments in time and achieves crystal-clear images of wildlife in their natural settings. His work has been exhibited in individual and group photography shows.

Many of his images have appeared in local and national publications. They are also featured in the local newspaper, the Point Reyes Light. As an environmental activist, he generously shares some of his images for the publications of select nonprofit environmental organizations in the Bay Area and with national and state parks.  Many of his images have been taken in Point Reyes National Seashore and California state parks in Marin County, but he also has images from his trips to other national parks and public lands throughout the nation.

Join Carlos for a virtual artist reception on Thursday, December 16, at 5:00pm.  Free registration via Eventbrite is required; registration closes 30 minutes before the start of the reception.

Wildlife Portraits during the Pandemic

Sarah Killingsworth is a Marin County-based wildlife educator and conservation photographer. Her photographs are the result of countless hours in the wilderness of the Point Reyes National Seashore watching and capturing animal behavior.  Sarah is passionate about sharing the magic of our wilderness areas with children, both by bringing the wild into classrooms, and in getting our youth outdoors, to learn about their environment. Sarah is a member of the Board of the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin, serves on the NANPA Ethics Committee and is a Wildlife Educator with Project Coyote.

The shelter in place orders of 2020 created a unique opportunity to slow down and spend more time photographing local wildlife.  By walking and biking into the Point Reyes National Seashore, Sarah was able to observe and photograph wildlife in the Spring of 2020 when few people were in the park.  Elusive animals like badgers and weasels were more visible; other animals were more elusive. The portraits in this gallery were all taken in the Point Reyes National Seashore between March and October 2020.  Join us on December 12, starting at 3:30pm, to learn more about Sarah’s wildlife photography and the animals featured in this gallery.
