Sue Gonzalez is interested in staying true to the light and color that is particular to West Marin, but she is not primarily interested in realism in terms of the image. She states that while painting water she is “most interested in conveying mood and exploring the boundaries between realism and abstraction”. She has been living and working in Point Reyes Station since 1970. She is a member of Point Reyes Open Studios and a former teacher with Shoreline Unified School District.
While many of Sue’s early paintings were narrative and figurative, her eventual interest in depicting water was influenced, in part, by early experiences. She grew up along the Wisconsin River and spent summers water skiing, life guarding and teaching swim lessons. These days, she explores Tomales Bay in a small fishing boat and takes photos that she uses as references for her paintings. Currently, Sue is focusing on creating large oil paintings of water that are inspired by Tomales Bay. Some paintings have references to locations along the shore, while others focus solely on the water.
Join Sue for an online reception on Sunday, March 21, from 5:00pm-6:00pm. Register for the reception here; registration is required.
