Point Reyes Books Presents: Shelby Wynn Schwartz*

December 1, 2022 by Chris Grace

January 28 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm PST

elby Wynn Schwartz joins us to celebrate the U.S. publication of her Booker Prize-longlisted novel, After Sappho (Liveright).

“After Sappho is a project of both imagination and intimacy, but also of significant research. Schwartz’s protagonists are all real people, but she has captured the essence of their lives and identities by means of what she describes as ‘speculative biographies’. One of the beauties of this strange, spellbinding novel – other, that is, than the dreamlike, pellucid writing – is this merging of fact and fiction, historical record and artistic vision.” — Lucy Scholes, The Telegraph

RSVPs required. Info coming soon.

About After Sappho

An exhilarating debut from a radiant new voice, After Sappho reimagines the intertwined lives of feminists at the turn of the twentieth century.

“The first thing we did was change our names. We were going to be Sappho,” so begins this intrepid debut novel, centuries after the Greek poet penned her lyric verse. Ignited by the same muse, a myriad of women break from their small, predetermined lives for seemingly disparate paths: in 1892, Rina Faccio trades her needlepoint for a pen; in 1902, Romaine Brooks sails for Capri with nothing but her clotted paintbrushes; and in 1923, Virginia Woolf writes: “I want to make life fuller and fuller.” Writing in cascading vignettes, Selby Wynn Schwartz spins an invigorating tale of women whose narratives converge and splinter as they forge queer identities and claim the right to their own lives. A luminous meditation on creativity, education, and identity, After Sappho announces a writer as ingenious as the trailblazers of our past.

“This book is splendid: Impish, irate, deep, courageous. . . . Brava!”—Lucy Ellmann, author of Ducks, Newburyport

About Selby Wynn Schwartz

Selby Wynn Schwartz holds a PhD in comparative literature from the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of The Bodies of Others: Drag Dances and Their Afterlives, a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award, and the forthcoming novella A Life in Chameleons.

Can Comics Save Our Democracy? A Conversation with the Author & Illustrator

October 24, 2020 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm PDT

Saturday, October 24

7:00pm

Unrig: How to Fix Our Broken Democracy is a new, nonfiction graphic novel by Daniel G. Newman with art by George O’Connor, outlining key problems in American democracy, proven solutions, and stories of activists working to effect change. The book documents the corrosive influence of money in politics, gerrymandering, voter suppression, the failings of the electoral college, flaws in our current voting methods and more — and how to fix them, in a format that makes the content widely accessible.

With the election so close, Chris Desser interviews author Dan Newman and illustrator George O’Connor as they discuss key themes from the book, the creative process behind visualizing how to fix our democracy, and the reforms we can put in place to create a more responsive, accountable government.

OLLI: The Stuart Dynasty: Cultural Jewels

September 18, 2019 by Maya Butterfield

The Stuart Dynasty ruled England in the 1600s, a time of transition from medieval to modern, and the founding of America.  Understanding them gives us insights into ourselves.  The previous course, Soap Opera, focused on politics and the lives of the monarchs of the dynasty.  This course looks at culture: their medieval medicine, crazy climate, art, magnificent theater, preposterous fashions, the Scientific Revolution, and the history of the English language.  We’ll meet some of the uncommon commoners who shaped our modern world:  Shakespeare, Sir Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton.  This course is taught by Charlene O’Rourke.

Sky Nelson-Isaacs in Conversation: “Living In Flow” Book Release

September 18, 2019 by Maya Butterfield

Join Point Reyes native Sky Nelson-Isaacs for the release of his first book “Living in Flow: The Science of Synchronicity and How Your Choices Shape Your World.”

Synchronicity or meaningful coincidence has been something philosophers and scientists have wondered about for decades. Most of us have experienced it at least once. You are on a much anticipated road trip and your vehicle breaks down. As you’re waiting by the side of the road a mechanic who specializes in just that type of car drives up and lends a hand. Is this just chance? Can two events be related in a meaningful way without one causing the other? If so, what does this tell us about the cosmos? Can we live in such a way and make choices that encourage synchronicity? Is that something we should strive for? In “Living in Flow” (North Atlantic Books, March 2019, paperback) physicist Sky Nelson-Isaacs turns to quantum mechanics to seek answers. Adhering to what we know from science, while offering a provocative new hypothesis, Nelson-Isaacs proposes that the cosmos may be designed to bring us meaningful, synchronistic experiences in response to the choices we make.

When we live in “flow,” a state of activity in which we align with our purpose and values, balancing our personal good with the greater good, we make choices that invite synchronicity. In addition to a layperson’s explanation of the possible physics behind synchronicity, Nelson-Isaacs shows how cultivating flow can empower us individually and help make our world a better place.
