Can Comics Save Our Democracy? A Conversation with the Author & Illustrator

October 6, 2020 by Chris Grace

Saturday, October 24

7:00pm

Registration required; registration ends 60 minutes prior to event start.

Unrig: How to Fix Our Broken Democracy is a new, nonfiction graphic novel by Daniel G. Newman with art by George O’Connor, outlining key problems in American democracy, proven solutions, and stories of activists working to effect change. The book documents the corrosive influence of money in politics, gerrymandering, voter suppression, the failings of the electoral college, flaws in our current voting methods and more — and how to fix them, in a format that makes the content widely accessible.

With the election so close, Chris Desser interviews author Dan Newman and illustrator George O’Connor as they discuss key themes from the book, the creative process behind visualizing how to fix our democracy, and the reforms we can put in place to create a more responsive, accountable government.

This event is free; donations are encouraged. Donations will be split between The Dance Palace and KWMR. To donate, please visit www.dancepalace.org/donate-now and mention this event by name in the comments section.

An Evening with Dr. Sharon Blackie, presented by Black Mountain Circle

September 18, 2019 by Maya Butterfield

Transforming Stories: The Fine Art of Shapeshifting   How can we navigate the liminal zone which lies between the world of the human and the other-than-human? How do we become what we are not, without losing who we are? The myths and folk tales of old Europe are populated by men and women who are able to shapeshift into animal form, or perform other fantastical self-transformations. Irish psychologist and mythologist Dr. Sharon Blackie discusses the meaning of these magical metamorphoses, and explores the ways in which these stories connect us directly into the Dreaming of this beautiful animate earth. Sharon will also read from her just-published book of new and reimagined fairy tales: Foxfire, Wolfskin, and Other Tales of Shapeshifting Women.   ABOUT SHARON BLACKIE: Sharon is an award-winning writer whose work sits at the interface of psychology, mythology and ecology. Her highly acclaimed books, articles, online courses and residential retreats are focused on the development of the mythic imagination, and on the relevance of our native myths, fairy tales and folk traditions to the personal, social and environmental problems we face today. Sharon is the author of the word-of-mouth bestseller If Women Rose Rooted: The Journey to Authenticity and Belonging, which offers up a new Heroine’s Journey for this age of social and ecological crisis. Her latest nonfiction book, The Enchanted Life, focuses on the mythic imagination as a bridge to a vivid sense of belongingness to a rich and many-layered world. She is also the author of The Long Delirious Burning Blue, and of Foxfire, Wolfskin, and Other Tales of Shapeshifting Women (2019).

Point Reyes Books Presents: Obi Kaufman

September 18, 2019 by Maya Butterfield

Obi Kaufmann, author of the bestselling California Field Atlas, returns to Point Reyes to discuss his new book, The State of Water: Understanding California’s Most Precious Resource.        About The State of Water: Obi Kaufmann, author of the best-selling California Field Atlas, turns his artful yet analytical attention to the Golden State’s single most complex and controversial resource: water. In this new book, full-color maps unravel the braided knot of California’s water infrastructure and ecosystems, exposing a history of unlimited growth in spite of finite natural resources–a history that has led to its current precarious circumstances. Yet this built world depends upon the biosphere, and in The State of Water Kaufmann argues that environmental conservation and restoration efforts are necessary not only for ethical reasons but also as a matter of human survival. Offering nine perspectives to illustrate the most pressing challenges facing California’s water infrastructure, from dams to species revitalization, Kaufmann reveals pragmatic yet inspiring solutions to how water in the West can continue to support agriculture, municipalities, and the environment. Interspersed throughout with trail paintings of animals that might yet survive under a caring and careful water ethic, Kaufmann shows how California can usher in a new era of responsible water conservation, and–perhaps most importantly–how we may do so together.   Location: Church

Pam Houston reads from her new memoir, Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country – Presented by Point Reyes Books

September 18, 2019 by Maya Butterfield

Pam Houston returns to Point Reyes to read from her new collection of essays on personal and environmental themes, Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country.   “Deep Creek is a love letter to earth, animals, and the best of humanity. Pam Houston has taken our heartache and woven it back into hope. Her stories of love, loss, and a life lived in a relationship to land give us good reasons not to give up on ourselves or each other. This is the book we need right now to remind us how to endure–passionately. An unstoppable heart song.” – Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Misfit’s Manifesto About Deep Creek:   On her 120-acre homestead high in the Colorado Rockies, beloved writer Pam Houston learns what it means to care for a piece of land and the creatures on it. Elk calves and bluebirds mark the changing seasons, winter temperatures drop to 35 below, and lightning sparks a 110,000-acre wildfire, threatening her century-old barn and all its inhabitants. Through her travels from the Gulf of Mexico to Alaska, she explores what ties her to the earth, the ranch most of all. Alongside her devoted Irish wolfhounds and a spirited troupe of horses, donkeys, and Icelandic sheep, the ranch becomes Houston’s sanctuary, a place where she discovers how the natural world has mothered and healed her after a childhood of horrific parental abuse and neglect.   In essays as lucid and invigorating as mountain air, Deep Creek delivers Houston’s most profound meditations yet on how “to live simultaneously inside the wonder and the grief…to love the damaged world and do what I can to help it thrive.”   Location: Main
