Can Comics Save Our Democracy? A Conversation with the Author & Illustrator

October 6, 2020 by Chris Grace

October 24, 2020 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm PDT

Saturday, October 24

7:00pm

Registration required; registration ends 60 minutes prior to event start.

Unrig: How to Fix Our Broken Democracy is a new, nonfiction graphic novel by Daniel G. Newman with art by George O’Connor, outlining key problems in American democracy, proven solutions, and stories of activists working to effect change. The book documents the corrosive influence of money in politics, gerrymandering, voter suppression, the failings of the electoral college, flaws in our current voting methods and more — and how to fix them, in a format that makes the content widely accessible.

With the election so close, Chris Desser interviews author Dan Newman and illustrator George O’Connor as they discuss key themes from the book, the creative process behind visualizing how to fix our democracy, and the reforms we can put in place to create a more responsive, accountable government.

The Dance Palace is working with local friends to keep creating community in these unusual times. We thank you for your donations and continued support, and hope you will consider a donation to help us keep bringing you classes, enrichment programs, literary and performing arts presentations. Your donations help unwrite the costs of these programs, which we offer to our community.

KWMR is truly homegrown radio. It is a vital resource for building and sustaining the community, and their constant presence has been critical during these challenging times. This is time for the Fall Pledge Drive–”the big one” for KWMR, when they secure the funding necessary to keep the station running. Pledge drive is the best time to make a donation, and every dollar helps!

Point Reyes Books is a vital part of the community. We encourage you to purchase your copy of Unrig: How to Fix Our Broken Democracy from our event partner. Stephen and Molly hold the belief that bookstores provide social and financial benefits to their communities. Purchasing your copy of Unrig from Point Reyes Books is an investment in the community.
