November 14, 2020 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Carol Whitman moved to West Marin from London in 1971. She’s lived there since then, with temporary moves to Baltimore and Berkeley. She raised her son Max here. She held many jobs, from school bus driver to medical assistant. After surviving a health crisis she returned to school and got a bachelor’s degree in Nursing, and a Master’s in Public Health. She worked in health care for many years.
She always wanted to be an artist, but never felt like she was one. She could master a craft like knitting, and loved the colors involved. She made jewelry, but there was never that creative spark of an idea that wouldn’t be denied.
Three years ago she converted the entryway in her house to a propagating room, growing flowers from seed. This led to bouquets that played with design, shape and color. Then came the pandemic and political turmoil. On June 2, 2020 she came home from a walk carrying some iris seed pods and three small puffball mushrooms. She arranged them on a table in the garden. Every day since then she’s made a mandala on this table. After a week of doing this, it was clear that she’d found her genre, at the age of 69.
The morning practice of gathering the plants, making, photographing, editing and sharing the mandala is the silver lining to this era in her life. It provides a calm, quiet focus, to ground her mind, body and spirit in the present, in the creative process.
This event will feature a conversation with the artist discussing several pieces, followed by a Q&A session. The online gallery will be available for viewing on the Dance Palace website for the month of November by visiting the Dance Palace Art Gallery after November 1.
