Mary and Joseph Siedman – Dance Palace Artists for February

January 25, 2023 by Chris Grace

February 1 – February 28 PST

This month in the Lobby Art Gallery we welcome mother and son artists, Mary and Joseph Siedman.

Mary Siedman has lived on the Bolinas mesa for over forty years and has enjoyed painting the surrounding scenery from the ocean and Mt. Tamalpais to the small flowers and tiny aspects of her garden. The school she attended had an extensive art department where she was encouraged as early as Kindergarten to pursue her interest in painting. Her mother bought her a set of oil paints when she was just nine-years old. When she was in her early teens, she had the opportunity to study painting outdoors with Western New York watercolorist Robert Blair. Mary continued to study art at the American University in Washington, D.C., under the direction and influence of professor and sculptor William Calfee. She graduated in 1977. Mary moved to Bolinas in 1979 and met her future husband Jack Siedman. When their children were young, she would carve out several hours of uninterrupted time by painting plein air. There she experienced the harsher elements of West Marin particularly the wind, so that keeping a brush, paint box and canvas from blowing off the cliff was a regular exercise. She painted throughout the years, including working on Bolinas musicals and productions; the Lounge Club posters and sets; and the Bolinas Children’s Center projects to name a few. She also had a working darkroom. In recent years Mary has spent more time in her home studio producing oils on canvas and panels. Check out her website for more images of her work.

Joseph Siedman:
Watercolor painting is unique in that the artist must be fully committed and intentional with each brush stroke. Once the paper is wet the timer has begun and it requires focus and confidence to get the results you want.  There isn’t time to take a break, or talk to a passerby.  Joe finds the process to be both calming and exhilarating! Most of his paintings require 3-4 washes, or layers of paint.  His favorite stages are the initial underlying wash when he uses lots of water and let colors mix and flow, and the final touches, when he uses heavy pigment, hoping to add just the right amount of detail. The surroundings in West Marin provide countless subjects and inspiration.  At times Joe will intentionally seek out a subject, but his favorites are the ones he stumbles upon when taking a walk on the beach or driving along Highway 1. As an artist, the two elements he focuses on are DEPTH and ATMOSPHERE.  It’s a magical moment when a flat piece of paper suddenly appears 3-dimensional with a single brushstroke. Using value, overlapping shapes, and composition Joe tries his best to guide the viewer throughout the painting.  Once that perspective has been established, he also wants the viewer to feel the essence of the painting’s atmosphere.  To feel the crisp air of an overcast morning, hear the crash of a wave, or sense the stillness of calm water are feelings we are familiar with in this area.  If he can capture that moment, and allow you to feel it every time you see the painting, then he has achieved his goal. See more of his work on Instagram.

Mary and Joseph Siedman’s opening reception is on Saturday, February 4th from 3-5pm, in the gallery.

Artist Reception – Sarah Killingsworth – IN PERSON

November 4, 2022 by Chris Grace

December 9, 2022 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm PST

Join Sarah Killingsworth at her opening art reception. Sarah is the Dance Palace featured artist for December 2022.

Sarah Killingsworth is a conservation photographer and filmmaker who has always loved wildlife and exploring wild places. She lives in Inverness part-time, and even when she is elsewhere, her heart is always in the Point Reyes National Seashore.  These photographs are the result of countless hours in the wilderness, watching and capturing animal behavior.  Passionate about stories of coexistence, especially with native predators, Sarah is inherently curious about the intersection of humans and wildlife habitats, how wildlife adapts to ever-encroaching human development as well as ways we can work to protect species before they become endangered.  Sarah is a frequent public speaker about wildlife, photography, and ethics.  A certified California Naturalist, Sarah is a member of the Board of the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin and the NANPA Ethics Committee and is also the Program Coordinator for the Keeping it Wild Youth Education and Outreach Program with Project Coyote.  You can see more of her photography on her website, or on Instagram @skwildlifephotos.

Carlos Porrata – December Dance Palace Lobby Artist

December 2, 2021 by Chris Grace

December 1, 2021 – December 31, 2021 PST

Carlos Porrata worked for 30 years as a California State Park Ranger, learning and sharing the natural and cultural history of the parks. Today, he continues to share his observations of the natural world as a wildlife photographer based in Inverness, California.

Spending long hours in the wild gives Carlos a great deal of pleasure and he exhibits that enthusiasm through his passion for photography. He captures moments in time and achieves crystal-clear images of wildlife in their natural settings. His work has been exhibited in individual and group photography shows.

Many of his images have appeared in local and national publications. They are also featured in the local newspaper, the Point Reyes Light. As an environmental activist, he generously shares some of his images for the publications of select nonprofit environmental organizations in the Bay Area and with national and state parks.  Many of his images have been taken in Point Reyes National Seashore and California state parks in Marin County, but he also has images from his trips to other national parks and public lands throughout the nation.

Join Carlos for a virtual artist reception on Thursday, December 16, at 5:00pm.  Free registration via Eventbrite is required; registration closes 30 minutes before the start of the reception.

Nancy Stein – August Dance Palace Lobby Artist

July 23, 2021 by Chris Grace

August 1, 2021 – August 31, 2021 PDT

Inspired by the mercurial weather of West Marin, Nancy’s art is indicative of the wild nature of the sea and land, with the ever-changing, always-inspiring, interplay of light and fog, and the unpredictable winds and weather. Capturing the movement and the transparency of the Point Reyes ocean has been a fascination. Appreciating all aspects of West Marin life, including the animals and landscapes of the ranches, as well as the wild lands in the national seashore have been important subjects, all of it is part of the fabric of life in the community.

Nancy’s art career began with a master’s degree in printmaking at San Francisco State University. She worked in etching, aquatint, and mezzotint for many years before beginning to work on large format pastel paintings in 2001. She moved to West Marin in 1975, where she built her own house and raised her daughter, Ana. In 1996, she built a small rental cabin built from a Douglas Fir tree that broke in half in a storm. Nancy has also worked for many years as a landscape designer/contractor. Nancy’s series of wave pastels is now on Wave #83, and she has recently branched out into working in oil paint. Her work also includes some work in ceramics.

For further information, please visit her website or contact her at NancySteinArt@gmail.com.

Join Nancy for an online artist reception on August 20, starting at 5:00pm. Registration is required, and ends 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. Click here to register via Eventbrite.

Sydne Bortel – January Dance Palace Lobby Artist

December 23, 2020 by Chris Grace

January 1, 2021 – January 31, 2021

Sydne is excited by deeply saturated colors as well as the quieter, subtle Japanese inspired work. Her inspiration for many of the quilts includes themes of nature, cultural and social issues, working with young school children in English language learners elementary school classes, travel, Japanese fabric and art, workshops, classes, other quilt artists, and the fabric itself. Cotton fabric predominates in most of her work, with cotton and other fabric in her appliqué.

Sydne began quilting in 1982, 11 years before retirement in 1993 from her long clinical social work career. Her hope at that time was to pursue more contemporary quilting techniques and move from traditional quilting to art quilting. Quilt size varies and now all are machine quilted with occasional hand embroidery. She is a qualified quilt judge. Volunteering with Marin AARP Experience Corps, she tutors first graders mostly from immigrant families who live in San Rafael’s Canal area and has worked with the students to create quilts in the classroom.

Join Sydne for an online reception on Sunday, January 24, at 5:00pm. The event is free, but registration is required. Click here to register on Eventbrite.
