Will Thoms: Paintings on Cardboard Dance Palace: March 2019 Working with cardboard is nothing new…many artists have used this delicate material in one way or another for reasons probably similar to mine…it is cheap, easy to find and quite beautiful in its own way. All of the paintings in this exhibit were completed in the last eighteen months on pieces of unfolded corrugated cardboard boxes which were then primed on all exposed surfaces with clear shellac to fortify them. The pieces were then further strengthened with simple wooden armatures glued to their backsides. Each piece is an experiment. There is a lot of trial and error involved, that is to say, a lot of failure. Eventually, with patience and resolve, something emerges from this inert material that is lively, even surprising…even, with luck, something beautiful. This intuitive process, one thing leading to another, for me comprises the joy of art making.
