The Chronicle in Color a Century Ago – A Talk by Gray Brechin

July 5 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm PDT

Dance Palace Church Space – $5, at the door

Few today are aware that major newspapers began printing full-page graphics in color in the late 19th century since most of the originals have been destroyed. Michael DeYoung’s San Francisco Chronicle was no exception, commissioning talented artists to produce original art works for its Sunday supplements. Inverness resident Gray Brechin has been photographing these illustrations from a rare run of the newspaper that teach much about how the city promoted itself and California to the world as well as the birth of consumer culture.

The Dance Palace will feature an exhibit of some of the illustrations in July.
