Road to Somewhere: A FREE Film Series

June 26, 2025 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm PDT

The road movie is perhaps the most insistently American of genres, offering an expansive view of the hero’s journey as it plays out inside a metal box hurling at high speed over pavement. Its protagonists are nomads, birds of passage crisscrossing a country glimpsed fleetingly in the rearview mirror: its vast, lonely tracts of land, its suburban sprawl and woebegone towns, its mirage-making stretches of flat pavement, its undergirding mythology, both recent and old.

This June, the Dance Palace invites you on a cross-country trek with a trio of classic films that trace the untrammeled possibilities and sheer perils of the open road. From outlaw fantasy to existential drift, these stories unravel across desolate highways, gas station pitstops, motel rooms, and other offbeat sublimities.

June 5: Thelma & Louise (1995)

Two women, a turquoise Thunderbird, the ride of a lifetime. With this pop-culture landmark, screenwriter Callie Khouri and action auteur Ridley Scott rewrote the rules of the road movie, telling the story of two best friends who find themselves transformed into accidental fugitives on a high-speed southwestern odyssey. This film is rated R and is intended for mature audiences only.

June 19:  Badlands (1973)

In his debut feature, Terrence Malick transformed a shocking 50s true-crime saga into sublime pulp poetry as Sissy Spacek’s baton-twirling South Dakota teen links up with Martin Sheen’s troubled greaser for a cross-country joyride that soon turns deadly. Set against the mythic landscapes of the Midwest, Badlands is both a one-of-a-kind couple-on-the-run neo-noir and a meditation on the American Dream. This film is rated R and is intended for mature audiences only.

June 26: Paris, Texas (1984)

A man walks out of the desert mute and hollowed. What follows is a slow, haunting return—toward memory, family, and self. Directed by Wim Wenders and written by Sam Shepard, Paris, Texas is a masterwork of longing and desolation — an elegy for the lost and estranged, set against the vast topography of the American Southwest. This film is rated R and is intended for mature audiences only.
