The Stuart Dynasty ruled England in the 1600s, a time of transition from medieval to modern, and the founding of America. Understanding them gives us insights into ourselves. The previous course, Soap Opera, focused on politics and the lives of the monarchs of the dynasty. This course looks at culture: their medieval medicine, crazy climate, art, magnificent theater, preposterous fashions, the Scientific Revolution, and the history of the English language. We’ll meet some of the uncommon commoners who shaped our modern world: Shakespeare, Sir Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton. This course is taught by Charlene O’Rourke.
