My name is Laurel Ann Riley. I am a visual artist, dancer, and educator. I grew up in Point Reyes Station and have been living between Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay for the past 3 years. Although I experiment with different mediums, I work mostly with watercolors, oil pastels, and mixed-media collage since these are the materials I can bring anywhere with me.
I use wide strokes and primary child-like colors to create vivid color-scapes, ranging from subtle to saturated. I bring together natural and architectural elements and poetry to explore sensations, emotions, and ideas. My work uses self-portraits as an exploration of growth processes, the natural world, self-image, gender, and the emotional experience of living in a body.
I make art to tell visual stories of the magic and possibility in everyday life. I came back to drawing as a personal process of journaling accompanied by drawings and expanded into larger paintings when living in Chile in 2017. I have been traveling and working as an independent artist and educator for the past couple years, painting murals and selling prints in outdoor markets throughout Chile and Argentina.
I created this body of work over the past 9 months, living in Uruguay. I invite you to pay attention to the sensations and emotions that move in you while viewing this collection.
