Art Gallery – We’ve Gone Virtual!

Ernesto Sanchez – April, 2022

Ernesto Sanchez’s work is mixed media and multicultural, incorporating influences from his Southern California childhood, his Mexican-American upbringing, his artistic studies in Asia and Indonesia, and his many years performing, teaching, and collaborating with artists throughout the U.S., Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Ernesto has been living and making art in West Marin for over four decades.

Working with symbolism, myths, stories from ancient cultures, his art blends these into a new expression of old and new, east and west.  His goal is to create pieces that act as portals for the spirit and vehicles for personal discovery.

Join Ernesto for an online reception on Thursday April 14, from 5:00-6:00pm.

Registration via Eventbrite is required.  Registration closes 30 minutes prior to the event start. To register, please visit Eventbrite by clicking here.

Rich Clarke – Dance Palace Lobby Artist

November 30, 2018 @ 2:30 pm - December 31, 2018 @ 12:30 pm PST

Rich Clarke's work will be on display in the Dance Palace Lobby through December 2018.

Artist statement:

Welcome to the Dance Palace.

I’ve had a 60 year journey with photography.

This current show represents an evolution into ‘image making’

the digital world offers.

So often, over the years I ‘documented’... Sierra's glaciated valleys, storm twisted Junipers, and Bristlecone,

sunsets, water and its powerful grace, family, Kehoe, and more…

The emotion of the moment was often evident, but the awe

in my heart  was left on location.

A number of the present images are a very small detail carved from what

the camera caught… isolated, blown up, edited to express the awe

I felt the moment the shutter clicked.

I hope you find some of it, too.

January 2019

Artist Michael O’Shea in the Dance Palace Lobby

January 2, 2019 @ 8:30 am - January 31, 2019 @ 3:00 pm PST

Artist Michael O'Shea will be displaying his work in the Dance Palace Lobby through the month of January.  There will be an artist's reception on Sunday, January 20th at 4 PM.  The Dance Palace Lobby is open to the public Monday - Friday from 8:30 AM - 3 PM.

Artist's Statement:

Art = Bricolage   "..in our own time the 'bricoleur' is still someone who works with his hands and uses devious means compared to those of a craftsman.... The 'bricoleur' is adept at performing a large number of diverse tasks; but, unlike the engineer, he does not subordinate each of them to the availability of raw materials and tools conceived and procured for the purpose of the project." Claude Lévi-Strauss   I feel this best explains my art. My art work becomes handyman stuff, born of restlessness, of curiosity, pushing old techniques. My tinkering concerns making something out of what is at hand, while embodying the essence of the object . My subject matters present themselves to me as worthy of attention visually, nostalgically, and conceptually.

March 2019

Will Thoms Dance Palace Lobby Artist

March 1, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - March 31, 2019 @ 8:00 am PST

Will Thoms: Paintings on Cardboard Dance Palace: March 2019 Working with cardboard is nothing new...many artists have used this delicate material in one way or another for reasons probably similar to mine...it is cheap, easy to find and quite beautiful in its own way. All of the paintings in this exhibit were completed in the last eighteen months on pieces of unfolded corrugated cardboard boxes which were then primed on all exposed surfaces with clear shellac to fortify them. The pieces were then further strengthened with simple wooden armatures glued to their backsides. Each piece is an experiment. There is a lot of trial and error involved, that is to say, a lot of failure. Eventually, with patience and resolve, something emerges from this inert material that is lively, even surprising...even, with luck, something beautiful. This intuitive process, one thing leading to another, for me comprises the joy of art making.

Closing Artist Reception – Laurie Sawyer

June 15, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm PDT

Laurie Sawyer is having a closing reception for her show in the Dance Palace lobby.

"Since I was a child, making pictures was one of my favorite calming yet invigorating pastimes. I have found that years change many things and then there are the things that never change.    I have lived in places with beaches and canyons to explore. Where flora and fauna abound. I've grown gardens and children. My artwork has been deeply influenced by all of it. Monet said "I am following Nature without being able to grasp her, I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers".  I concur.   My most recent work is directed towards Scientific Illustration. I  hope to share my concern for this beautiful place we inhabit, and through the creation of pictures share stories that might inspire understanding and respect for the world around us."   More information about Laurie's work can be found at https://www.newcompassdesigns.com

Jennifer Thompson Lobby Artist

August 29, 2019 @ 9:15 am - 4:00 pm PDT

Jennifer Thompson   Family, Friends and Landscape   Dance Palace Lobby, August 2019 ARTIST RECEPTION SATURDAY, AUGUST 3,  2 - 4 PM     Feeling daunted by the larger social and political landscape, I prefer to concentrate on the local, the immediate, the familiar. These subjects soothe my soul and amuse me, as well  as reminding me to be grateful to live here in West Marin, with  so much natural beauty and so many enjoyable individuals.   I am as interested in the shapes and expressions of people as I am in the landscape – more, maybe. That continues to be the focus of my painting. I take pictures of people I want to paint and work slowly, in oil paint, from those photographs. I’m lucky enough to have a studio on the property where I live, on Inverness Ridge, where I am surrounded by light, trees, birds, cats, foxes, and family. That seems to be the perfect recipe for my work. That, and some travel now and then.   For sales or future commissions, contact me directly:     Jennifer Thompson   thompsonjennifer2@gmail.com   415-233-2733
