The Stuart Dynasty: A 17th Century Soap Opera
Following their Tudor cousins, the Stuarts reigned for four generations over the 1600s, the most turbulent century in English history: civil war, a time without a king, plague pandemics, and witch hunts ran alongside the Scientific Revolution. England was transforming from a medieval monarchy into a modern state. Living soap opera lives, the Stuart kings and queens, colorful, dramatic, and controversial, gave us riveting stories as they rode the roller coaster of the 17th century.

Charlene O’Rourke, MA completed a Master’s in English and, to be practical, chose a career programming mainframe computers for the finance industry. In retirement, she was finally able to return to her first love, 17th century poetry. This led to a dedicated delving into the history of the period and a fascination with the stories of the extraordinary people who invented our modern world. She has taught popular courses on Early Modern England for four years to the students of Sonoma State University’s OLLI program.
