SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are always available from the Dance Palace for those who would like to take a class but cannot afford the full fee. All you need to do is fill out a simple form, which you can get at the Dance Palace office or from your class teacher. For information, call 663-1075.

GENERAL CLASSES & WORKSHOPS - FALL 2010

DANCE PALACE THEATRE GROUP
Work with director Tina Taylor and voice instructor Laura Alderdice on weekly acting classes. The upcoming sessions will include physical improvisation and dance. Please be prepared to move and expect the unexpected! Newcomers always welcome.

FAMILY DOG I
A beginning-level class that covers all the fundamentals of good canine manners including sit, down, stay, come, polite greetings, walk nicely on leash, wait at doors and leave it. This class includes fun exercises and games using positive reinforcement but is conducted entirely on leash and does not include “playtime.” The goal of the class is to enhance the relationship between you and your dog. Proof of current vaccinations required at the first class. First class is mandatory for people only. No dogs, please! This class is limited to 6 dog/handler pairs, and must have a minimum of three pairs to proceed. For dogs 4 months and older. Primary handler must be 18 but children are welcome to attend with an adult.

BOARD BASICS FOR NONPROFITS
This workshop will cover the fundamentals of nonprofit board governance, focusing on the basic responsibilities of every board. The workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to assess the strengths of your board, talk about how to build on those strengths as the organization grows and expands, stay up-to-date on current law and practice about nonprofit board governance, and provide new energy and creativity based on your board’s dedication to its mission and values. Carol Friedman has over 30 years of experience in nonprofit management as the former Executive Director of the Dance Palace and works currently as a nonprofit consultant in the areas of fundraising, board development, and organizational assessment.

FUNDRAISING BASICS FOR NONPROFITS
This workshop is designed to get nonprofit board members and staff involved actively in fundraising by showing you how many ways it can be done - and how easy and efficient it can be to ask for money. The workshop will demystify the process, help you overcome your fears, give you the tools for successful donor fundraising, and show you how fundraising is based on your own passion for your organization’s mission and goals. PILATES
Sicilian-born Maria Mankin is a Stott Pilates Certified instructor, and with her background in Circus arts, brings fun and creativity into her classes. Her classes focus on body awareness, strength-training, core and stamina building, balance and well-being. She has worked with a variety of clients at different levels of fitness from the fittest athlete to the injured and recovering individual. Teaching with many Pilates props, while keeping a good pace for the group, Maria can adapt exercises suggesting appropriate modifications if needed.

GENTLE PILATES
A gentle approach to Pilates for people who have difficulties lying down on a mat. The class will focus on Pilates exercises which will improve movement, core strength and balance for the day to day life. SUNDAYS TAI CHI CHU’AN
We begin each class with warm-up exercises and Qigong breathing. New students learn the Tai Chi Chu’an form at their own pace and are individually taught. Long-time students practice the set together and also learn weapon sets and shaolin. Ellen Serber was trained by Sifu Kuo Lien Ying, who certified her to teach in 1988. CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH FOR BEGINNERS
This course is intended for adults who already possess a basic knowledge of Spanish and who are interested in Spanish for work, travel, and/or to communicate with Spanish-speaking people in the community. The class will mainly involve conversation regarding contexts of interest to students, in order to build comprehension and speaking proficiency in Spanish. THE MYSTERY NOVEL
Beginning with the fall series we read several early gems of mystery fiction. The intention of the class is two-fold: a thorough physical experience, modified for each person’s individual level, and a time to focus on calming the mind. Ellen has taught for 38 years; she is certified in the Iyengar tradition and has also studied with the Desikachar family. She has trained teachers and also is on the review board of The International Journal of Yoga Therapy. She continues her study of yoga with Ramanad Patel.

GENTLE YOGA WITH DEBBIE DALY                        
In this quiet and relaxing yoga class, gentle stretching postures are held for 3-5 minutes at a time. The stillness takes practitioners deep into postures that calm the mind, lengthen the connective tissues, and increase energy flow.  This practice is very beneficial for the joints, especially the hips and lower back.  Gentle enough all students, including seniors.  A generous period is given at the end of class for a guided full-body relaxation, with live music by Tim Weed.  Debbie Daly has been teaching yoga for 11 years and is the owner of an award-winning yoga studio in Arizona.  Begins May 4th.

FLOW YOGA WITH DEBBIE DALY

Elizabeth’s classes teach the fundamentals of Iyengar yoga. Elizabeth attended teacher training at the Yoga Room in Berkeley and the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco, where she apprenticed with Judith Lasater. GENTLE YOGA with ELIZABETH BARNET

CRAZY SCIENCE 

Fun and creative nature studies and science experiments, indoors and outdoors. Learn what makes the cosmos swirl! Fun, interactive Physical, Earth and Life science experiments. KIDS MUSICAL THEATRE
A quirky tale in which a queen puts her subjects to the test: who will move the large boulder from the road? Anyone kind enough to move the stone will be handsomely rewarded with a job as royal counselor to the queen! A host of wacky characters pass through the scene as the queen and her faithful servant, Barcarole, watch from a hiding place to see who will be unselfish. A play about community.

Working with clay engages the imagination and facilitates developmental learning – and it’s just plain fun! We will create sculpture and practical things. For ages 5–12. WEDNESDAYS
AFTER-SCHOOL ART PROGRAM 

A multicultural art program taught in both English and Spanish for children ages 5–12 by Colleen Conley, West Marin School art teacher; Toni Littlejohn, mixed-media artist; and Dolores Gonzalez, whose native language is Spanish. Artists of many cultures will be invited to participate. The children will use two- and three-dimensional media - painting, printmaking, carpentry, ceramics, jewelry, and textiles - to develop their own unique expressions.

CREATIVE DANCE LAB
Students will explore improvisational Creative Dance at an intermediate level. Creative Dance Lab is an intermodal approach to movement and dance, which combines somatic movement, solo dance, group dance & ensemble skills, theater games, play, performance, rhythm, drawing, storytelling, and Scoring, an aspect of the RSVP Collective Creativity model. “It is my intention to create a playful and nurturing environment where children can express their unique creativity, gain self confidence, and develop the essential life skill of creative thinking.” No previous dance experience needed. Instructor Taira Restar has taught children and adults for over 25 years. She has an M.A. in movement education, is on faculty at Tamalpa Institute, and performs in Anna Halprin’s company. EXERCISE IS FOR LIFE – SO LET’S HAVE FUN!

This class is designed for older adults and/or people with disabilities/special needs. The exercises include warm-ups and motion aerobics, stretching, and light resistance training. Come join us – enhance your physical performance, heighten your sense of well-being, and decrease emotional stress and anxiety. All participants must have a signed release from their doctor and a signed consent to participate. Instructor Mary Salmon is a certified senior fitness instructor. Sponsored by the Dance Palace.

SENIOR BALANCE AND FALL PREVENTION
Balance is a skill that can be improved at any age. This class welcomes all ambulatory seniors who wish to improve their walking and balance skills in everyday activities. The class will combine elements of T'ai Chi, as well as practical balance exercises for every-day life from a variety of disciplines. An optional complimentary massage is included to provide an opportunity to ease tight muscles that may be interfering with mobility. TUESDAYS
CREATIVE CERAMICS FOR SENIORS

During this 7 session/week class you can work on your own continuing projects or you can learn new techniques. During this session we will focus on how to create slips and engobes and how to decorate your hand build ceramic creations using various application techniques, as well as how to create and work with colored clay inlays. No previous clay experience is necessary. Class is limited to 12 people.

August 31 - October 12. $125 for this 7 week session. This includes materials. Scholarships are available.

CREATIVE CERAMICS FOR SENIORS
During this 6 session/week class you can work on your own, continuing projects or you can learn new techniques. This session will focus on how to use the various extruders, and how to create wonderful and unexpected forms using the Dance Palace large extruder. No previous clay experience is necessary. Class is limited to 12 people.

GENTLE PILATES
A gentle approach to Pilates for people who have difficulties lying down on a mat. The class will focus on Pilates exercises which will improve movement, core strength and balance for the day to day life. Students will sit on a chair to perform gentle exercises with the help of different Pilates props such as balls, stretch bands etc.

A weekly meals program for seniors ages 60 and older sponsored by The Dance Palace in cooperation with Point Reyes Seniors. Meals will be prepared by the Palace Market & Deli. For information and reservations, call the Dance Palace 663-1075; reservations must be made by 2 p.m. on Tuesdays.

GENTLE YOGA WITH ELIZABETH BARNET
This gentle yoga class is especially for older men and women as well as those who need a slower pace. We move from restful, supported postures to gentle warm-up movements to classical yoga postures. Each individual builds upon his/her strength, flexibility, and balance, giving careful attention to breathing and postural alignment. Elizabeth Barnet trained at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco and The Yoga Room in Berkeley, and has taught at the Dance Palace since 1991. Elizabeth continues her studies with master yoga teacher, Ramanand Patel.

OUTDOOR RECREATION
Outdoor recreational facilities are available for your use at the Dance Palace, including a basketball half-court, volleyball net, and outdoor Ping-Pong table. Balls for basketball, soccer, and volleyball are available for public use in the holder next to the court; Ping-Pong paddles and balls are in a container by the Ping-Pong tables. Please return them when you are finished.
